I just bought a Fujitsu external hard drive (60 GB USB 2.0 HandyDrive) and have been trying to set it up on my computer. I am running it through a powered USB hub via 2 USB connections and it appears to be getting adequate power. However, my computer says that I need to reformat the hard drive, but when I try to do so it just sits there for a long time and does not reformat. If I cancel it, I can open the drive window but cannot move files into it and it shows that it has 0 GB capacity. I have the same problems if I plug it directly into the computer. Is the hard drive broken, or how can I get it to work? Thanks.

Get your money back and buy another one. Most external hardrives are plug and play and should automatically install on your hard drive with no prob. Check the box and make sure that your computer hardware and software is compatible with the external hard drive. You may just have a system that is not compatible with the hard drive you purchased. Try buying a different brand from a completely different company and make sure you check the back of the box for the software/hardware requrements to run the ex. hard drive. Go to best buy or Comp USA and talk to the geek squad techs. Give them the specs for your computer and they could make very good recommendations for free. They help me out all the time when I am updating my technology which seems to be every 6 months to a year now.

i presume your gonna want to put an o.s on it operating system, there are various ways of doing it lets start this way turn on your pc at the first screen you should see press f2 or delete to enter setup do that and what your gonna do is find the boot sequence and yr gonna put cdrom as the first item then exit remember to save the settings to cmos exit is f10
put yr o.s disk in the cd tray and with any luck your gonna see boot from cdrom press any key to continue and the rest is all yours to learn if you get to where we are now its pretty straight forward just follow the on screen messages .you will be given options on screen to format your hard drive you decide what s best for you
depending on the o.s your installing you can only put vista on ntfs file system and not fat32 so you may have to convert yr hard drive which is convert c: /fs:ntfs and this is done from the comand prompt screen also you could do it this way. now if you have a floppy drive you can insert a boot disk in and to format yr hdd you will 1st type fdisk /mbr it will then pause and then come back to a: now you type fdisk once in fdisk you must delete all partitions every one thats there you will see flashing signs saying are you sure u wanna do this you hit yes ,now this is important you dont exit fdisk you make a new partition and make it active it tells you whats going on. once your done and you have a partition exit fdisk reboot yr pc with floppy in still and when you get a: you type format c: /q
q is for quick format if its not allowing you to do a quick then just do the conventional way after format is complete you type in setup or setup c: you may have to go into d: at comand propt and setup from there make sure yr o.s is in yr pc i hope i have been hepful not confusing you i hope goodluck p.s once up and running go to www.pcpitstop.com and your can run a full system scan and it will tell you if your pc is ok or not cheers ,,p.p.s also when u have the hdd in your pc make sure yr jumper settings are ok you know master/ slave good luck
