It doesn't cost anything unless you're late returning the books. Usually they let you check out the books for a period of two weeks or so. After that, if you don't return the books when they are due, they cost twenty five cents a day penalty late fee, or something like that
They will issue you an i.d. card, require that you sign a form and provide some sort of identification. You'll probably need to prove you're a local resident. So if you live 50 miles away or so and want to get a membership at a library that's 50 miles or more from where you live cause they have certain books you want to borrow that your local library doesn't, you'll need to know a friend that lives close to that library, cause libraries don't like long distance borrowers
I've re-discovered the joys of my local library. They have books that I've been wanting to buy, but can't cause I don't have the space to store them at home; but at least I can read the books

Well where Iam you have to get a Library card 1st,just go to the Library and ask for a slip to fill in,the staff should be able to give you more information, then you will be able to take out books, but I believe there is a limit, there shouldn't be a charge to take out books, but in some cases if they become overdue (not taken back in time) then there may be a fee.
Lol sorry Mel I started my sentence the same way as you by coincidence.

Not sure where you are from but I've lived in the UK and Australia and in both places public libraries are 100% free. You need to register to get a library card (free) and then you can check out as many items as you like (no limit) - and it is all free!!

Yes, you need a library card. That will require identification, however there is no charge. Checking out books is also free, however if you bring them back late after the due date to return them there will be a fine.

No it doesn't cost you anything. It only costs you something if the books you take out are over due. You just go to your nearest library and go up to the desk and ask them how you go about getting a library and then they will direct you to the right area.

It is free to check out books at the library but you will get fined if you return them late, just like you do at the video rental stores

I am not sure of other countries, but in South Africa you only have to supply proof of your residential address, like a copy of your electricity account & you can get a library card to take books for about 2 weeks @ a time @ no cost.
I have been doing this since I was about 10years old, then I used my parents details to obtain my cards.

It doesn't cost anything here in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to get a card, or to check out books, you are charged a minimal delinquent fee for late ones.
