The Universe is a cosmological structure that is defined as per the Big Bang theory ,and as something that did not exist ,before it came to be born into existence.

So no further Scientific or Cosmologist explanation is given as per what material existed making up a singularity before the countdown of Creation.

As per the Big Bang theory before zero plus seconds the singularity was just a volume of a mysterious substance that had been floating around inside the nothing.

So this singularity ( a condensed universe the size of a golf ball) must have been floating in nothing for too long ,and all of the sudden in the span of 10^-43 seconds this golf ball sized Universe experienced a fantastic expansion from the inside volume of nothing and became something which is still expanding into the nothing.

Science was a per the Big Bang theory has defined The Universe as a Singularity which came to life along with its timed structure.Hence with the Birth of the Universe ,"Time "was also born .
And as per Doctor Stephen Hawking Time came into being as a particular size and shape, and having the form of a "Pear."

At One time it was believed that the Earth Was flat. Today in the World of Physics and Cosmology there is a belief that the Universe is" Flat."

Now to our common understanding these scientific descriptions of the Universe appears as magical. However; in the World of Science these beliefs are considered real.

As per the scientific observation of the Cosmic background radiation(CMB) was observed and interpreted as proof that the Big Bang of the singularity occured

The Bulk of the Space of the Universe is basically invisible(Dark)to Human eyes. The visible part of the Universe are Galaxies and Star systems.
The ratio of the Volume of the Visible Universe to the Total Volume of the Universe is infinitessimally small.
Somewhere within this astronomical volume of the Universe sits the Earth where we live.

We are a significant part of the universe in that we give it consciousness and self awareness.

Wikipedia has as a definition, "The Universe is defined as the summation of all particles and energy that exist and the space-time in which all events occur. Based on observations of the portion of the Universe that is observable, physicists attempt to describe the whole of space-time, including all matter and energy and events which occur, as a single system corresponding to a mathematical model."

The universe is made of space and time; 3 dimensions of space and 1 dimension of time, which are exploding. Space-time is like the 4-dimensional surface of a balloon that is expanding. Energy is like vibrations on the surface of the balloon, like waves represent energy on the surface of water. Matter is made out of energy, as in Einstein's E=MC^2.

The explosion is still going on in space right now, the light has to fill the whole area, it just shows how huge it is because the big bang happened millions of yrs ago.

if you are talking about the universe in astronomy that is just as simple as the place where heavenly bodies are and its distance is at infinity they say...
but if you are referring to the universe in thermochemistry, it is the combination of surroundings and system.

I believe we will find that our universe is a timespace within which a certain set of physical laws and dimensions exist. Where other physical laws/dimensions exist is elsewhen and elsewhere.
