Yes, but my typing is carp as my hands don't work in synch ... but then handwriting isn't very good either. I find verbal communication much simpler!

Yes, I believe typing is quicker than writing, and the advantage is you can easily correct any thing you feel correcting and amending without much efforts and with accuracy. Reproduction and editing is also speedy.
But that doesn't mean to all the way shy away from writing...must practice writing because never typing can totally replace writing, never and ever. Writing is a reflection of a personality, your mood, your artistic way of presenting words on paper, for your strokes in writing is you and distinct.

If my writing is legible (Readable) then it's definitly faster typing. But I can write faster, it just generally comes out illegible when I write that fast.
Generally speaking, younger people can type faster, and older people write faster. But that is just generally speaking and does not apply to everybody.
