There are lots of definitions. As a teacher of English as a Foreign Language I (currently) prefer the idea that grammar is a way to extend the meaning of vocabulary. The constructions below are meaningless without the vocabulary item PLAY:

I PLAY
She PLAYs
I PLAYed
You had been PLAYing
We were PLAYing
They might have been PLAYing

and so on. Many students (and some teachers) think that grammar is more important than vocabulary and spend a lot of time worrying about it. But remove the word 'play' from the above examples and they communicate nothing. So grammar is a set of gizmos for extending the meaning of vocabulary items into different contexts, and the meat of the language is vocabulary.

Honestly English grammar is not easy for a foreigner like me, I get really confused.
