What broadband modem? THere were some issues with Speedstreams and these routers. See Netgear for details.

This actually affects many routers not just netgear!

Have you tried other channels on the router?
In todays market many times you just have simple interference issues and switching channels may eliminate the issue. If you have not tried diffenent ones do so. If you are on channel 1 try 11 if you are on 6 try 1 or 11 even try 4 and 8 just to be different.
Many items can and do interfere these days *cordless phones, wireless speakers, wireless headsets, bluetooth, wireless cameras etc.

When you updated the firmware, did you update both router and wireless card? You may need both! Its not uncommon for wifi cards to need changes as well as routers. *
On the update to the router firmware, did you reset the router to factory defaults after the update and reconfigure? some of them are stubborn and simply don't update until you do a full reset! (they are computers after all).

Turn off security on the router, does the problem still exist? If not you have a security compatibility issue (no too uncommon either) If you are running WPA try WEP, does it work? if so you need updated card drivers for your computer.

If all of these don't get you to a solid connection you may simply have a bad router wireless card (happens but not often)

See netgear for other tips.

Be sure to pick the correct VERSION of your router.

Good Luck.

Are you sure the problem is the wifi router? Have you checked if your broadband modem or broadband connection is stable? To check this, remove the wifi router and connect your computer directly to the broadband modem. If the internet still keeps dropping, then report this to your broadband provider, there is a problem with your service. if the inet is stable, then maybe try resetting the wifi router. there is usually a small button hidden in a hole that you can only use a fine point pen to push.

The range that your wireless adapters can go depends on a lot of factors like how far are you away? What technology is your router? (B,G,N) What are your wall made of? How many walls are you going through? Are you using a microwave or something similar? Microwaves can disrupt wireless signal.
