Fundamental Christians believe the Bible is the word of God. Period. Science has little to do with it.
You may have read about the Creation Museum that opened in Kentucky about a year ago. It is very popular and the operators are petitioning to enlarge the parking lot. Many of the exhibits are presented with a diorama contrasting the "evolutionist view" versus the Biblical view. The Biblical view is often presented in a (pseudo) scientific manner. For instance, the various layers of rock that the evolutionists claim gives proof to the age of the earth is nothing more than differential sedimentation after the Flood. Unless you have a firm grasp of science, the presentation is very seductive.
The problem with this is that there remains a strong possibility that some states will permit, even mandate, creationism to be taught in SCIENCE class.

Because they like to believe that the Bible itself is the complete history of the world.
What they fail to take into consideration is that the Bible was originally written in Aramaic, then was translated into Greek, then translated to Latin, then Spanish before ever being translated into English and there are many different English translations.
Like the old saying "Something was lost in translation", plays a big part in the Bible.
Another thing that they ignore is that back in biblical times there was no concept of "Years", time was measured by the Lunar cycle. Therefore when the Bible says that Noah lived 900 years it was probably more likely that he lived to the age of 70, if you consider the number of Lunar Cycles in a year.
Also, these type of people are very closed minded and will not listen to reason.
They will also not accept the fact that Christ was probably born in April and not in December because the ONLY time that shepherds tended their flocks at night was when the females were giving birth, which happens to be in April.

Some try to make it out to be a space trip because of its prophesy content. From New and Old Testament.
Plus biblical working out of circle is mathamatically interesting, seem more logical than modern day reasoning.
But regarding your question about fundamentalists, maybe they are fundamentally wrong, but don't let it upset you, if possible try to understand where they are coming from.
Always a good idea to first study the problem; before jumping at its conclusion.
Jesus often corrected people, and when he did, it was always in love. Based on sound reasoning and good judgement. If you prefer, he did it logically.

I dont know of anyone who thinks its a science textbook. It can be a history textbook if you care to trace back into the Pharoes times. I dont really understand the Bible, but some people can pinpoint specific times in the Bible to specific times in history. Maybe there is some creedance to it.
