My friend is using windows ME, and trying to open a .doc file in wordpad, but he keeps getting an error (MSWRD832.CNV)

I looked it up and found he needed to format the file to a .rtf, but I cannot find out how to do it with windows ME. When saved from email, this file does not give an option to save it in another format. Also, all the programs I found that convert files are not compatible with ME. Can you help?

WordPad can only open pure text documents and documents saved in "'rtf" format.

Have your friend try the free, and M$-Office compatible, Open Office instead, from:

Included: Writer (like Word), Calc (Excel), Impress (PowerPoint), Base (Access), Draw (M$-Paint) and Math

Just make sure that if you want others to be able to view the documents using M$-Office Word, for example, save them using "Save as..." in .doc format, instead of the default .odt format.

Or use the built-in PDF creation feature.

It does run on ALL versions of Windows.

A .doc file is a Microsoft Word file. It cannot be opened with Wordpad. If you still have access to the machine that has Microsoft Word on it, open the .doc file and save as .rtf. Then transfer it to the Windows ME machine and it should be able to open it.
