History of the U.N.

The name "United Nations", coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was first used in the "Declaration by United Nations" of 1 January 1942, during the Second World War, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their Governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers.

The United Nations was founded by the WWII Allies as a successor to the League of Nations : France, the Republic of China, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Soviet Union, now the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. (The Republic of China was replaced with People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union with Russia.)
