I know you can remove a broken off bulb with a carrot or potato but I have no vegetables handy. I do have a stale cruller would that work? There is a bit of the glass still sticking out and if I wait till morning I might be able to get a fresh bagel from Mrs. Goldberg in 2A and remove it that way.

If the light switch is off, it's just building up electricity behind the light socket. Go ahead and turn the switch on, use a damp sponge to protect your fingers and remove the broken bulb. If you're afraid, have Mrs. Goldberg hold your free hand.

Funny you should ask, I just did this for my sister yesterday. If all the elements of the broken bulb are removed, you can use a potato, cut to the size you need, press it in and turn it, until the bulb screw remnant turns and comes out. Sometimes, using a pair of needle nose pliers or regular pliers will do the job, I used the needle nosed pliers and the bottom of the bulb, easily turned and came free. Just be sure, to unplug the lamp cord, take off the shade and the harp, so you can get at the screw section of the bulb. You may have to bend the edge of the screw section in, so you can get a grip and turn it free.

Do you have a pair of long nose pliers? Otherwise when you get the fresh bagel from Mrs Goldberg, you could ask her for some pliers and use these to remove the bulb socket, then have the bagel for brekkie. Please make sure switch is OFF !

Your other Q is the same in that some answers are actually concerned.

Actually you may have dozens of various substances around the house that would be as effective as the late bagel. Hopefully too; you have band aids.
