A vessel is something that something else is transported in. It could be a blood vessel (transports blood), a city bus (transports people), a gift - whatever that might be - transported to the recipient by the vessel. Kind of like the messenger. It's like saying "hey, it's not my message, I'm just transporting it".

vessel here is simply a carrier or container bringing the gift from his or her mother to you
