The protect their heads until they were able to reach their targets. If a pilot got shot in the head, he might just crash into the sea.

All fighter pilots wear them to lessen extreme air pressure when in flight. Commercial air pilots only wear headphones because they only fly slow and at a certain altitude.

The same reason that you wear a seatbelt on a commercial airflight today. You do not want to get hurt in a fiery 500 mph crash into the ocean.

it may sound foolish that they were going to die anyways why would they try to protect themselves??? well. the answer is that helmets served more roles than just protection. they had microphones, earpieces, built in radio... they allowed the pilot to stay concious and informed. In order to hit the targets they had to be conscious and alert

They liked the reflection shinning off the helmets -
they thought they could bring attention to the g-ds to bring a swift and honor ful death. Also it was a honing becon for them.

To make it look like they ACTUALLY had brains to protect. Did you know some of them just did it so their families could have a years supply of rice. i understand their thinking but surely theyd be more useful alive than dead.
