An interesting question. Alas our technology in not advanced enough to sustain several people for extended periods of time on space. The farthest we could even think of going is The Moon, maybe Mars. In addition it would take decades to build a ship in orbit (it would be way to big to launch from the surface of earth) just to send off few hundred people. I do understand your concerns though. I've had the same thoughts.

No that much technology available right now.
Think, earth has so much of population and not many people are capable of living in spaceship...
Man has not reached to mars till now, So, what we do go to another place???
Nearest habitat planet is 40 light years away, hence, If we go with the SPEED OF LIGHT, We will reach there in 40 years. Which spaceship can carry food, clothes for 40 years???
We have to develope technology.. Space technology
Research is quite impossible for going with speed of light.
So, environment is borned to protect earth at our home.
We need to concentrate on bursting out the disasters coming to earth

I would rather stay on earth it's the only planet I would ever call home. I also don't believe the current global warming hype. Mankind will adjust even it means going underground.

We'll HAVE to go somewhere in approximately 5 billion years when the sun enters its red giant phase, which will completely engulf Mercury, Venus, and Earth.

well we have plans to send man to mars in the near future. mars is the next planet humans would be able to live on. we would have to wear space suits cause the atmosphere on mars would burn our skin. there is also a chance that there is still water on mars which would make it easier for us to live on. but i wouldnt want to have to put on a space suit everytime i wanted to go outside.

You have a better place in mind?
And to anyone who suggested Mars, how is freakin' Mars a more habitable place in even the most imaginary sense of things?

Why? Until we learn as a society how to use resources wisely, we'd just as likely muck that one up as well. Not to mention, that things may be even worse as far as climate and resourse availablility somewhere else.
