I know you have to go to law school, but what happens before that? I don't even know if its what I want to do, the criminal aspect seems boring, but the business and tax aspect seems pretty cool...

I went to college before and failed out, but I'm a lot different than I was back then. Can I just start from scratch again at a new school if I don't want any credits to transfer, or do I have to let them know anyway?

Lastly, what does someone major in. I was thinking Political Science... Or would I need to go with criminal justice?

First, you need a four-year degree. Then you take the Lsat, which is basically a standardized test - kind of like the sat but tests different things. Next, you apply to Law school and hope to god you get in. There isn't one specific thing you need to major in - anything from music to science, but it wouldn't hurt to major in history, government, or literature as the ability to write and research are required. According to all my Law School friends, the profs pretty much assume you know nothing so criminal justice may help, but they will teach you what and how they want to anyway. Also, schools may be looking for someone who is different and stands out. I do believe that you are required to tell them about your previous school as they will need your transcripts. I'm not going to lie, you need a good gpa and an impressive lsat score because lawschool is competitive. On the plus side, most schools will look at your gpa and realize that your grades have improved and are now consistently high. A brillient lsat score may balance out a less impressive gpa. There are schools who will accept you, but you probably won't get into any top tier schools unless your lsat is in the 170s range. Doesn't matter though because there are many great regional schools! Good luck and i'm glad you are rethinking your education - even if law school isn't what you want!

oh, and as far as criminal vs. business, there is actually a lot more money is business :)

Sir Hound,
You need to get a bachelor's degree, then apply to the Law School of your choice. Since business and taxes are of interest to you, I would recommend you get your degree in accounting or something similar. Forensic accounting and law would be an excellent combination, or be a tax lawyer.

You don't need to start at a new school. Now that you have corrected the challenges you were not meeting before, you simply explain that to the school when you re-apply. You should also see an academic counselor and get their advice. They know just what the university wants in a student. They might also have more ideas for majors that will work for you. Even if you change majors later, have the conversation with the counselor right away.
