Well, if your one of those people who hate smelly animals and everything DO NOT get a hampster or a dog .. a hampster smells or urine in its cage and sawdust whilst a dog just stinks ! Dont get me wrong i love hampsters and dogs .. i use to have a hampster and im getting a dog!
The best pet to buy is deffiantely a cat there cute, cuddly, affectionate, dont smell, fun, you can play with them, and you dont have to worry about them going outside on their own because they will obviously come back unlike dogs. Get a cat ! I know you said no cats but you really should.
The only thing i can think of for a good pet other than a dog or cat is probably a parrot they are so cool and deffinately fun. You can teach them to talk and tell them when to stop. They dont need much taking care of as their pretty much in their own little cage with everything they need but you can teach yourself to take a parrot out of the cage and onto your arm. Although the only problem is, they are quite noisy in the night .. if you have a small apartment/flat or something this is not the ideal pet but other then that its great!
Rabbits are boring.. they bitee you when you try to get them out of the cage, all you ever see them do is sleep.
Tortoises do not do anything apart from sleep and walk about EXTREMEMLY slowly.
Hampsters have a very short life spam .. the shortest one i had was 7 days. You will be upset when they die as well.
And the rest are exactly the same ! x
Hope you find your ideal pet!

It all depends on where you live, how much time you want to spend looking after your pet and also how much money you have available.
If you have lots of all of those you could have a horse, but then working your way down, how about a couple of pygmy goats (can't have just one because they are herd animals and not happy alone), then a dog, a cat (needs a lot less attention than a dog) a guinea pig, gerbils, (I think these are much better than hamsters because they are awake in the daytime and don't bite) or a tank of fish.

Depends on what you're looking for and how much time you'd like to invest. Some animals require more attention and maintence than others.
Out of all the animals I've had that I really enjoyed company, besides my cat is my leopard gecko and recently (as of today) aquired rats.
My gecko was just funny. He's not much for cuddling, but he always seemed to be smiling. He always tried to make himself look bigger when I stroked his back and he'd settle down again.
My rats I adore. One is 5 months (she was previous owned and giving to the pet store owners, who breed rats to show and pets mainly). I had her out during most of the movie "Seven" and she sat on my chest under my hands and allowed me to pet her or she sat on my shoulder sniffing my hair. She tried very much to stop me from putting her into the carrier at the store and just stay being held. The other is just a baby of 7 weeks, she still needs to get use to being handled, but she was the first one I picked up that wriggled, but didn't try and make a mad dash for freedom. It's almost tempting to get a third!

it depends how dedicated you are, Like a doberman needs a lot of dedication, it needs education, exersize, a good diet, almost like a child, because the are really special pets and demand the respect they need since they are dominant creatures. A gold fish, you just pop it in the bowl and feed it. A cat sometimes leaves and never comes back, unless it's hungry or needs a warm house(how much I hate cats) to sleep in when the weather is cold. So a good pet is the one that fit's your personalities and characteristics and most importantly the dedication you are going to give it...

Hi AB.
If I didn't have a cat or dog, I would definitely get a myna bird. There are several types of birds that speak; but a myna bird sounds so much like a human that it's uncanny.
For example:
One of my brothers is a police officer. He had to file a report on an attempted break-in and robbery. Stopped by: one myna bird. (I bet THAT caught the captain's attention).
An elderly woman came home & her apartment door looked messed up, as if someone had broken in. Being a savvy city woman, she knew enough not to go in, but to call the police.
They arrived & saw that the door looked as if someone had taken a crowbar to it. With guns drawn, they quietly opened the door. They suddenly jumped back when someone yelled, "who's there?" They ordered the person to come out where they could see be seen. Again, they heard, "who's there?" They slowly moved inside until they saw — you guessed it, a myna bird.
They started to crack up with laughter. They immediately knew what happened. Someone HAD tried to break in. But when they started to open the door, they were greeted with, "who's there?" Thinking someone was at home, he (or they) took off running.
The police spoke to the elderly woman. She said she stayed home most of the time, but had a lot of visitors. Every time someone came to her door, she'd say, "who's there," and eventually, her myna bird picked up the habit.
So, her myna bird scared away the robbers & saved her apartment from being robbed, as well as possibly saving her life.
So, I'd get a myna bird, because if they can scare away robbers, they make good pets. Plus, I could teach them to say, "that's interesting" after everything I say - lol

it depends on the type of pet you want and what you are after from a pet. if you want a animal that will be very happy to see you when you come home from work... dont get fish,
if you want a animal that you can teach tricks to... dont get a tortoise... etc...
any animal can be classed as a "good pet" depending from what you want from a pet. if you want a easy pet thats low maintenance, a good pet would be a snake or a tarantula. etc.
so ANY pet can make a good pet depending on what you are looking for.
( on the other side i love RATS xD )

Hamster! They are small, easy to take care of, fun to play with, and you don't have to watch them all the time.
They are cute and soft, and you can do literally anything with them besides swimming and playing football. :D They can eat almost anything besides sugars, and they love chewing up tissues etc.
Get them a cage with a wheel, lots of wool/tissues/paper, and some food and watter, don't forget some tunnels like toilet rolls, and they will be fine!
I have a hamster and i never regret it!

I vote for a parakeet. We had one, when I was growing up. We bought a record(back when they had 45's). The record played over and over again, "It's absolutely preposterous." Well. after awhile, the bird said that.... His name was Bobby Bird. He said that alot, too... Sorry to go on and on... Yes, a parakeet is a good pet to have...
