So I have this lamp with a red base and white shade. I got it when I was five to go with my rainbow wallpaper, red gingham curtains, and Rainbow Brite bedding. But I digress.

Over the years, my room has changed but my lamp hasn't. It's been ok because my room was very unique. Now I'm away from home and I want to put this lamp in my living room next to the couch. However, the red really doesn't go with the color scheme of the room. Is there some sort of primer I can use on it or special paint I can use so it won't chip off? I think the lamp base is some sort of glass or ceramic.

Red often bleeds through other colours, to combat this: paint the object with green for a couple of coats, then add the correc t shade of primer depending on the final coat. Then add your final/presentation colour. Job's a good'en.

If you think about it, make-up artists used this trick also.

Good luck, or get someone to accidently drop it and go and buy a new one, give it to your granny or make the room rematch the lamp!

You're going to have to, because
painting over red can contaminate
colors.

I painted over an ugly contaminated
red color once using white ceramic
paint.
Let it dry well.
Repaint it the ceramic color of your choosing.
Let it dry well.
Spray it with a ceramic sealing.
