I remember when word of this movie came out first that Jim Carrey was up for the role. I dont know why he dropped out. He also dropped the role of Willy Wonka (BOOOOOOOOO) to Johnny Dep (DOUBLE BOOOOOOOOO)

if they were just now casting it and it was still between Jim or whats his name.

who would you pick

personally i would pick Jim Carrey. I was pissed when he droped it and Willy Wonka.

I do hope he keeps the rumors true of him as Murdock for "A-Team"

Steve Carrel (the guy from Evan Almighty) is MUCH more suited to play Maxwell Smart.
Not only by physical appearance but because although Jim Carey is a comedic genius, he goes too over the top and i think would ruin a movie like Get Smart where Maxwell isn't so loud and extroverted.

So overall, i'd pick Steve Carell.
He's hilarious, and a good actor!

Steve Carrell is an amazing comedy actor, I think.. and I'm looking forward to seeing him in Maxwell Smart. And I don't really agree that Jim Carrey would've been good in Evan Almighty, since he's arleady marked as Bruce Almighty.. on another note, though, Evan Almighty was a horrible movie.. not even Steve, Wanda Sikes, or Lauren Graham could save it :(

And Johnny Depp is a MUCH better character actor than Jim Carrey, I think.. I thought he was perfect as Willy Wonka and I'm looking forward to his new movie, Sweeney Todd!

Jim Carey as Agent 86? No, not a good fit. He is over-the-top funny which clashes with the personality of Don Adam's character.

Bill Murray would have been a good choice for the role; as would Denis Leary or Will Smith. Unfortunately, none of them currently has the box office draw that Carrell has shown lately.

"Evan Almighty" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" did excellent at the theaters and on DVD. Steve Carrell has hit his stride, which says a lot more for him than Jim Carey's "23."

Carrell has the Look for the role but I don't see him delivering the lines the way Adams did. Carrey may be able to do the mannerisms but he doesn't have the look.

Personally, I would have gone in a completely different direction and inserted Steve Buscemi. The teeth might be a problem but his cadence would be perfect.

Of couse if you really want to put yourself out there Kal Pen.

I'd pick Steve Carell. Jim Carrey just doesn't fit.

I think hes a great choice. Hes really funny & is good at pretending to be annoyed/frustrated which was the always the character's primary trait, other than klutziness.

I think either would be perfect! I love them both.
