I'm guessing that you speak english as your native language. learning correct english through schooling will help in edjucating people on the correct ways to speak and write english. without this knowledge, you look like a fool or an idiot. no one can expect to be successful in America without being able to speak proper (or at least not ignorant) english.

the books/poems/movies/plays you read or watch, teach you about life, when you learn about interpreting them. it teaches you to write and to speak formally and smart by also adding new words to your vocabulary (essays, speeches, impromptus). it teaches you to think outside the square when you interpret texts (reading on the lines-achievement and stating the obvious, reading between the lines-merit stating the obvious but also putting in the thinking behind this, and above the lines-excellence stating the obvious and putting the thinking behind it and broadening on it) i think english teaches you also a lot of common sense as well. it depends on what enlish classes you take, if you take full english you learn all this, if you take a lower english, you tend to be learning about texts that are a waste of time, if you're learning esol english, you're just learning how to speak the language. i am lucky that i have made it into full english all my high school years and find it my favourite and most useful subject that i can relate to my life and useful in real life. in my english classes we would learn about texts like othello, to kill a mockingbird, pride and prejudice, dead poets society, amelie, chocolat, cloudstreet, and many famous poets.i want to take it at university and do english literature and want to write a best selling novel that will become a tv soap. if you think about programs like harry potter, greys anatomy or many movies, they were all books before they became loved by movie and tv fans. and they all relate back to english in a lot of ways
