The topic of FEMALE composers is really hot right now. There's a lot written on the topic and so you could narrow it down to what specifically interests you.

Contemporary: Ellen Taffe Zwillich, Libby Larsen, Joan Tower, to name a few.

Composers of the past: Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Nadia Boulanger, Elizabeth Claude Jacquet de le Guerre, Hildegarde von Bingen.

Another idea might be Music Therapy. I've read some interesting things on the topic lately.

** Edit** What about how music affects social issues (and visa versa) like war, the sexual revolution, drugs, ecology. It might be interesting to see how music of today relates to music of the past. By past, I mean perhaps going back as far as the Middle Ages or Renaissance.

If I knew what your other interests were, I might be able to come up with other ideas that would tie into those interests.
