I wouldn't hold that against him, but Mitt is not my first choice. I think that the USA does want a man or woman of Faith and it does not matter what Faith. There was an article in Newsweek this week quoting John Kerry as saying he did not come out early enough last election on his Faith.
The voters do not require that the President be a regular church goer, but they believe that having Faith in God shows that their Leader has high moral beliefs and standards.
I have learned a lot about this Faith since he is a strong candidate, and as we learn about any Faith they all have their own interesting facets. But no Faith can be held under a micro-scope and come out perfectly understood...that's why it is called FAITH!
It is a good question.

Beats voting for a socialist or an athiest.
I thought a man's religion question was settled when JFK was elected. Everyone back then worried the Pope would gain power here. Didn't seem to make a difference then...why now ?
Just so we are clear...NO Mormon rules for how this country is run, then ok by me.

As much as I would vote for any other Christian. I'm an atheist, and I can say from first hand experience, at least I've never met a Mormon who was a bad person.

I frankly do not care which religion a man or woman believes in as long as I feel that the person can do the proper job for America. However, on second thought I would be concerned about the person's inner feelings that would hamper his/her job. I would be fearful (in my heart) that the person's religion could affect his/her judgment to make the proper decisions for all Americans. At this moment in time (and my decision could change over the next year) I would vote for Romney if he were a candidate. I am not a Republican but I think that Romney is a good man.

No, I wouldn't...and here's why: despite Romney's hasty disclaimers, he would be under some constraints from the monolithic control from Utah...make no mistake, Mormonism is not democratic. Their equivalent of 'pope' [president of the LDS] is considered a prophet--and if so moved, can rearrange large blocs of church beliefs around...as happened with polygamy and promotion upward of the African-American members into full membership. Thus, Romney [unless he is secretly a 'jack Mormon'] would remain under the jurisdiction of his prophet, no matter how bizarre the dictum might turn out to be.
Mormonism does not approve of educated or 'uppity' women, deplores homosexuality and excommunicates those who practice it, believes that contraception and abortion are evil plans to prevent existing little souls to have earthly bodies [no lie, the little souls are up in heaven waiting] and should not--repeat not--be voted into our White House. If Romney is a 'good Mormon', he'll have to walk the walk... golden plates, baptism of the dead, prayer undies and all the rest of the cultish bizarrerie.

Sure. Have you been to Mormon areas? They have the best drinking water, widest streets and friendliest people. I spent some time around Idaho Falls this year. Mormons have lovely communities.

The only reason I would lean towards no is that by definition their religion is more restrictive that how I live my life.
I don't drink to excess, but I am not going to forbid you to drink.
I don't smoke, but I am not going to force you to stop (by all means, smoke more and die faster- I don't want you in the gene pool).
It would be hard for a true Mormon to be president since their beliefs are contradictory to a large majority of the US voters.

I myself am Mormon, but it PISSES ME OFF when I hear friends talk about voting Romney JUST because he's Mormon. Vote for a candidate because you believe they are the best candidate (available) for the job! Not because they're black. Not because they're female. Not because they're Mormon.
Look at how they control the issues.
And by the way... OBAMA '08!
