It's very simple. You tell them that the civilization and culture into which they were born was not perfect, but that was better than any previous ones, with more opportunity and freedom for all, and that you expect them to maintain and make it better, rather than destroy it.

The history taught in schools worldwide tends to be little more than one side of any story. History is written by the winners, after all. To better examine and balance the story would take a good deal of time and good research facilties, which most people don't have until university level.
So, I think young people do eventually realise that perhaps what they have heard up to now is carefully sanitized and go in search of more knowledge. It just happens later in life.....

It really depends on how young the "youth" are. The very young should learn about their nations historical heroes so that they get a view of how their country came to be the way it is. It is probably necessary to leave out the unpleasant aspects of these heroes at this early stage. Later on, when they have grasped the basic goodness or heroism of the nations heroes, you can begin to introduce their flaws so that they see these people as ordinary mortals and not as gods. Just common sense really.

While it is important not to make George Washington more than just a man, it's also important not to make him the "white devil."

Thomas Jefferson is a very conflicted figure. He did abhor slavery, but he recognized the practical need for it in his own life and the economic system he, himself existed in. Is it reasonable for elementary school students or even high school students to be able to talk about this and to devote enough time to Jefferson's political beliefs and philosophies to do him justice? It isn't really feasible until college, and even then it's difficult.

Slaves go back like near to the beginning of the book of Genesis. Nazi's had subhuman slaves they kept penned up in KZ camps. The Japanese kept slaves of ALL ethnicities, including orientals. North American Indians enslaved other Indians from rival tribes, *****'s enslaved other *****'s from rival tribes. In America Socialist's try to enslave ALL Americans through punitive taxation. That's why you'll save a TON of money on your punitive taxes if you vote for Ron Paul & support OUR Libertarian party to take back YOUR personal freedoms & OUR country from the republOCRATIC "MAGICIANS"!
