When she plugs her data storage device in it is not recognised. Can anyone tell me if that is due to it being run on Win 95 or whether its because of the age of the pc. She would ultimately like to be able to do homework in her bedroom which means that she needs to be able to store the data to work on school projects and move between different machines.

Windows 95 does not support USB. Assuming that she has a USB storage device. Windows 98 does.

While not a professional-class response, here are my feelings: What the guy said before me is correct, USB wasn't invented until after 1995. The best solution would be to go either online or to any computer store and buy a cheapy computer for $150 or less. Running Windows 95 just isn't efficient at all.. *can't even use a modern word-processor*

If you want to stick with that old computer and use the USB ports you can get the Windows 98SE (Second Edition) upgrade, brand new, on Ebay for cheap($15 and up). Just make sure its brand new, from someone with great feedback, and is the SECOND EDITION. You could put ME in but its lots more and the computer probably wouldn't run XP worth a darn.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

You Need Win98 SP2 or higher. See if the Home addition of Windows XP will work on the machine. Or you can always try using Linux. Linux runs pretty well on older machines.

Try upgrading to XP or at least 98SE. It would help a lot
