You need to brush up on your history. Affirmative action came about because other efforts to equalize the playing field for minorities, especially blacks, were not increasing the number of blacks both in education.
- do you realize that blacks were denied education, voting rights and jobs in the south well into the 1960's? How is a child supposed to compete for college and a job if he or she can't get an education? In some areas, that is still happening, and it's a horrible indictment on our country still. There hasn't been enough time to reach all the pockets in this country that still NEED affirmative action in education and employment.
-- did you know that from 1890 to the 1950's, over 3800 blacks (mostly men) were lynched in the South, primarily in Louisiana? Lynched--hung up by the neck until dead.
-- the cases that brought about Affirmative Action were so egregious that the courts had no recourse other than to pass down their ruling that blacks deserved a leg up to help even the field.

Is all AA effective or even necessary? No, it's not. There are still huge pockets, though, where massive discrimination still takes place. Fortunately, there is a solid middle class now, but that's fairly recent in our history.

Same idea with different circumstances for other "minorities," which in itself is a bad word. And yes, I'm a white person.

I don't know where affirmative action even exist anymore, many states have stopped affirmative action for public schools in places like Georgia and Washington State(a liberal State).

People should stop blaming minorities for their inability to get into colleges and get employment. You may just not be employable.

A person may need additional education or some social skills.

Maybe you are not the best candidate. Schools don’t always look at scores alone.

My son has out scored whites consistently every single year on national test and the psat(98%)and a lot of other blacks do the same, but the white students were alwayss the teachers pet in Georgia, alway got the awards.

I don't whine about it, he carries on despite what appears to me to be unfair.

Only one generation of black have had equal treatment.

People born in the sixties were some of the first blacks to receive some equal treatment, many of them have children who are now able to have what white have had for years and years.

Although SOMEONE like BUSH can still get into COLLEGE if they have a RICH daddy and low scores. "Talk about low expectations"

Great for leveling the playing field. Take the University of Michigan for example. Prior to being eliminated via the ballot, a student got 20 points for being black or Hispanic while being any other race got you 0. To negate the value of academic achievement, the SAT score received 10 points with a 4 point difference between a SAT score of 1600 and a SAT score of 1000. It was similar for GPA. We took individual accomplishment and subjugated it in importance to simple group membership. Great way to stay competitive in a global economy. Deny opportunity to those who worked the hardest to earn it.

The point is to keep us down and convince us that we are inferior and need protection from the all caring elites. As a black American, I am deeply offended that the government treats me as though I can't do it on my own; that I need extra help. I am quite capable of carrying my own weight and will happily compete against anyone. While AA is packaged as a hand up, it really is a tool designed to keep us down. I for one, can make it on my own merit and greatly resent anyone telling me that "my kind" needs their help.

you don't live in the South, do you????

a couple of weeks ago, I read an article about a high school in Alabama. It was having it's first integrated prom this year for the first time in the history of the school. And there were many parents that were upset about it. Racism is alive and well in the South and other parts of the U.S.
