Savings bonds, but at least a token toy of some kind. Kids really don't value things that are off in the future; they experience only in the moment. Let them just be a kid a little bit.

Since he is an infant he is really not going to have a clue - in which case I would get him a savings bond and a sweet toy for him to play with. Either that or you could do one of those Build A Bear Workshop things - sweet, meaningful, and he can cuddle with whatever you make for him. Did it for my two kids and they still sleep with their bears every night (now they are 6 and 4).
