I want to take ballet and I've seen a lot a people saying you're not supposed to wear underwear and only wear tights, but I can't imagine walking around like that. I've seen others say they wear underwear with it all the time. I've also seen something about a dance belt, and I have no clue what that is.
Also, some people have said you shouldn't wear a bra under your leotard or something weird like that. Can anyone confirm or deny any of these statements?

i have NO idea what people are saying now, but 15 years ago, my ballet teacher sent people home if they weren't wearing panties and a bra. ( bra if they were over 11 or so).

She said that irritation and infection was very likely if one did NOT wear panties.

I'm in ballet and I always wear underwear but you should try to get skin coloured or something close. That way if your body suit rises up a bit your underwear won't show too much.

I have never heard of a dance belt but maybe it's one of those tummy tuck things?

If you need a bra, wear it. Last thing you need when your doing a jump set is for your breasts to be flying around. Try and get a Leotard that Covers the back of your bra. I've seen too many ballet dancers with their bra sticking out the back.
If your bra straps fall down at all you might try safety pinning them to your body suit. I mean that gets pretty anoying when your dancing.

Also don't worry too much. I don't know what your situation is but most dance schools are pretty relaxed unless your going to an especially strict school like in Winnipeg. And you can always just ask the teacher what she would prefer you to wear.

Good Luck and don't ever quit just because it's hard, the first year is the hardest but once you learn the basics everything is so much easier.

I don't normally wear underwear underneath, unless i have my period. Many leotards are high cuts, meaning that the underwear is visible underneath, unless you also get high cut underwear. You'll find that your ballet tights (if they are good quality) have a lining in the crotch which is a substitute for underwear. As for a bra, again i don't usually wear one. A leotard will hold you firmly in place, as the leotard is supposed to be tights. There is no need for a bra unless your especially large busted. I do think it would looks a little strange with a bow back leotard with a bra or sports bra. If you do want to wear under wear, it is beast to get a low cut leotard, with a higher back, and thick straps. This doesn't leave many options!

My teacher lets the little kids wear underwear, but when you get to like 12 she doesn't want them on anymore because it looks weird and, if you're dancing on stage and someone sees your panties think of how embarrassing that is. The basic thing is tights, leotard, but if you are uncomfortable you can wear it the other way around.
P.S. a dance belt is for GUYS only

I do dancing and it depends on how strict your dance teacher is. Some care alot about presentation and will not stand for the dancers to have their underwear showing. You can where any type of undies as long as you can't see them for exams so any underwear with a high leg will do. WE are allowed to wear any bra we like in class but for exams some wear low ones that can't be seen with long straps or they sew a bra into the leotard, but most don't have one, good leotards should be supportive enough not to need one for an hour.

I used to just wear tights when I was a child now I wear whats called a body suit. It works really well as it is like a very thin leotard, like underwear and bra in one!

You can wear underwear, but you may want to invest in some thongs for embarrassment's sake. And you do not have to wear a bra, but some people have no choice as they need that support! Don't forget, dancers do lots of moving!

Always wear a bra if you have anything to hold up. As far as underwear go, it's up to you. I never liked more than one confining article of clothing. So, I never wore underware with a leotard or even with nylons unless I needed to wear a pad in addition to a tampon because underwear kept it more secure.
