What a very interesting question! And, being aged between 55 and death, so very many things have been invented in my lifetime that it's hard to just pick the best one!
When I was a kid our toilet was in the yard and Mum washed clothes in a tub. I've seen the advent of fridges, washing machines, and phones in people's houses as well as in red phone boxes! In the 1950s ordinary families (not just rich ones!) bought cars. In the 60s people bought transistor radios and men went to the moon. The 70s saw plumbed-in washers and the first heart transplants. The 80s, computers - MS Dos and Wordstar! Yippee! Then came the internet, mobile phones, digital cameras, the wii.
And what do I like best? Maybe the electric guitar....wonderful music! Perhaps my new laptop....though tomorrow I know it'll be something else!

yes cell phones have made a difference and are useful when travelling. The poor countries have benifitted a lot by cell phones and can really make a lot of difference.
I am a fan of the Leatherman multi-tool also it is so useful when you need a knife etc. Just yesterday i connected my car battery with one.
The internet is another useful invention - you can do so much and I keep a blog which is good fun.
