Boiled water loses all of its oxygen, so the fish suffocated. By quickly cooling it, the water didn't have a chance to replenish the oxygen levels.

When you boil water, oxygen leaves the water. Believe it or not, fish also need oxygen to surive. When water cools, oxygen slowly returns to the watch. The fish, no better say suffacated(died from lack of air) due to the water being boiled. Fish need the water to be a certain temp, to survive.

There are several possible reasons:
~Not enough oxygen
~The water was too clean (yes this can happen, especially with fish from petstores. They can go into shock at the sudden cleanliness of the water)
~The water wasn't properly conditioned beforehand to remove excess metals and chemicals
~The fish was not given enough time to adjust to the temperature of it's home.
~Etc.

Did he put any water conditioner in the water? Boiling it wouldn't help get the crap out, only some. & then fish still need the 'good' bacteria in water. Always use tap water with proper purifier/conditioner & then use a test kit if you are unsure. :((((( Awww, poor fishy!

I believe the heading should be "why did the fish DIE", not "DIED". But, I think it was because the fish had frozen or the water was too cool or something.

You don't put a fish straight in fresh water you have to put it in water with the water it used to.
