I purchased a small chest freezer and I am going to keep it in my craft room. An older friend of mine mentioned that I should put a piece of wood down on the carpeting first because of a potential fire danger, as I think he said the motor was on the bottom. Do you know if that is correct? Thank you.

There is usually an inch or so of space between the actual motor, and the bottom of the unit. The bottom of the freezer in that compartment should not get too hot. It is also vented to the side or back. Leave room for that ventilation.

Support for the unit would be my concern... letting the chest freezer sit directly on the carpet will cause it to leave a definite mark in the carpet and pad. I'd put something down just to help spread out the weight, so the carpet wouldnt be marked so badly.

You could use a couple of furring strips, or plywood strips under each pair of legs, or even a sheet to go under the whole thing.

One other thing here -- most of these units have a drain. This helps when you need to defrost the unit. Most have a fitting on the outside, that you can connect a garden hose to... check and see how close this is to the floor... you might want to jack up the freezer just for this reason alone. Oh.. make sure that drain is capped until youre ready too...heheh... be a mess if it drained onto your carpet.

Have Fun

I wouldn't worry too much about the fire danger.......if there was one you would see and hear warnings about it.....
I believe a lot of people put wood under them when carpet is down because it gives the freezer a little more support and besides plywood can burn just as easy as carpet..........
