The americans dream whites only apply?
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Black Americans are failing to climb the social ladder, while a worrying number born into the middle classes are now actually poorer than their parents, according to a study released on Tuesday.

The report by Brookings Institution scholar Julia Isaacs found blacks were missing out on a cherished American dream that their children will be economically better off.

"Children from middle- and upper middle-class black families experience a generational drop in income that is in sharp contrast to the traditional American expectation that each generation will do better than the one that came before it," she wrote.

Do you think rap music is keeping blacks poor? and have to do with blacks not doing well?

I think there are probably many reasons why black kids are not going on to become successful. There seems to be a real victim mentality among SOME black kids. Instead of creating opportunities in the face of an imbalanced society, they would rather point fingers and see themselves as victims of every kind of racism. Racism exists period. It's a horrible, ugly thing. But YOU become the idiot if you let other people's racism and society's racism keep you from achieving ANYTHING. Racism will always be there no matter what, which is sad. It would be nice if we lived in a world where people DIDN'T judge others based on outside appearances but it doesn't seem to be happening.

I think the far leftists and radical blacks who say opportunities are not equal for black people in this country are probably correct. Schools that are in black areas are sometimes poor quality schools - with old textbooks, buildings falling down, few computer labs, etc. In that environment, of course it's going to be harder for a black kid to compete with the white kid 20 miles away going to the nice public school that has the computer lab. It's sad.

The American Dream, I believe, is still alive and well and open for ANY race as long as they are willing to work hard and have determination. That's the problem folks. People want to have the "dream" handed to them. That's not what the American dream is about! When immigrants came to this country, they didn't expect handouts or for everything or everyone to treat them fairly. They were often treated very badly but they CHOSE to work hard and excel. It's all about how much YOU want it.

Working/middle class Americans of all races are not doing well in the "new" economy created by globalization. Since a higher percentage of blacks are working class these result may be just be a result of the fact that an increasing share of income is going to the very top, and average take home wages are actually falling.

I feel that Rap music does not help. It demeans women, and called them all sorts of bad names, and many of the songs are sexual in nature, and children as young as6,7,8 and up are listening to this, because their parents are not monitoring them. What is ashame is that many black kids are starting to have sex at the age of 10, they are doing it because they listen to this nasty rap that the parents or teens go out and purchase, and they will purchase the explicit version. The black community need some one who will address these issues, and discuss what needs to be done in the industry to get more positive roll models, and for some one to finally stand up and say "we have got to stop this" what we are doing is hurting our kids" Black children along with the white children are our future, and we should be instilling old values, and instead of playing the victim all the time, stand up and say enough is enough. instead of burning bras, we need to be burning these elicit CD's and maybe someone will get the picture. all children need POSITIVE roll models, some one who will say....you are better than this, you are special, and for the kids to get a hug, many ethnic children along with white children don't even get hugs and kisses from their parents, those positive things will go along way, tell the children they are worth it, if they can dream it, they can achieve it.

boo hoo, I think most people can claim "while a worrying number born into the middle classes are now actually poorer than their parents", not just black Americans, considering many of our parents and grandparents were Union members, during a time when China wasn't doing all of our manufacturing.

I wouldn't doubt it. But what is the American dream? Is it soley to be rich? Or is it to be comfortable doing something you love? People want everything handed to them on silver platters now. Noone wants to work anymore. Laziness and a lack of motivation and imagination is what is keeping everyone, not just black america down.

Rap music as the cause? No, i dont think so. Society and in most cases, lack of a good education, are responsible for this.

I personally think that anyone can do anything they put thier mind to, as long as they are willing to work for it, so the American dream does not apply to whites only. But sadly, some people have to work a lot harder to attain it.

the inability of black kids to stay in school, learn to read and to study is the biggest problem wirth their inability to climb the economic ladder...beginning at about age 10,their interest turns towards sex, money, cars, pitbulls, and dope..and such cultural interests as rap only reinforces this drive/dream world..by age 16 they cant think of any other life and thats what happens to them....cant get up the ladder without college and being able to read...

What a load of crap. It is more like "the American dream - white males need not apply." I can not get a job because I do not fit any minority quotas for hiring. The Brookings Institute are just a bunch of left wing quacks that sit around thinking of stupid crap like this then shill it to the liberal media.
