By nature of definition no, if one thing is completely P then it cannot be completely opposite of P, making it not itself. However human beings are alot more complex, and therefore much more difficult to put into such simplistic boxes. For example I think that that no one person is completely pessimistic or completely optimistic all the time. They can demonstrate a regular pattern of behaivior, but vary from time to time. For example the individual who posted first, simply ranted and was rather facetious, he may demonstrate that typof a behaivior pattern regularly, and occasionally be nice to people, or maybe he is usually nice, and strayed from that and was rude to you. Ultimately it is really not possible for to put a human being's personality into such defined boxes.

Sure, your not an optimist on all things, correct, and your not a pessimist on all things....it depends on what the subject is, think about it....some days you may look at things differently...depending on your mood....that's the way most people are....like some days I may get up and say, "I'm going to win that lottery today, I know I am, I just have that feeling", and other days I may say, well I just know that I'm not winning today....and believe me this has happened to me many a day....one day I said, "I know that one of my kids birthdays are going to come out today", but I couldn't make out which one, so I said, oh well I'll play all four, and didn't one of them come out straight and boxed, and I won almost four hundred dollars...so some days I'm a pessimist and others I'm an optimist...see why !!!!!!!!!

I think at the conscious level either the optimist or the pessimist will always feel that way. But inwardly and more subconsciously there is a degree of the opposite within them but it always remain subservient to the dominant emotion.

Of course they can.
A serious person can have times when they are joking around and loud and happy, but still be a serious person. A drunkard isn't always drunk but sober as well, and a non-smoker may have a cigarette, stop there and still be a non-smoker.
Sure, for a minute you may consider them an 'optimist' but this would be fleeting, and if it is fleeting it wont really count.

Pessimism and Optimism are relative words. Put a person who has a migraine headache in a ward where all the people with terminal brain cancer are. He may change his attitude from one of pessimism(how bad he has it) to seeing how he is not so bad off.

Can a person become a pessimist as an adaptive response to an overwhelming state of optimism? ... thus creating a certain degree of balance to their outlook?
