It paved the way for a centralized, nation state.
Prior to its becoming the "norm" of government, the nobility of nearly all countries were waging incessant warfare. "What's mine is mine, and what's yours, is going to be mine".
All of the Catholic countries, and some of the Protestant, supported the concept of the monarchs "divine right" to govern, because it made for a much more secure, stable and peaceful state of affairs.
And the poor peasants were more than glad to have an authority to whom they could appeal over the heads of their immediate overlords.
In the final analysis, I would say that it served a very useful purpose of bringing order and relative peace to most of the continent, and the British isles.

I'm not sure this is totally correct, but they could do anything they wanted to, there was no vote of the people and if they married someone they didn't like and they were not allowed by the religion to divorce, they just cut her head off. Once the head person in France said when they people were poor' Oh let them eat cake in the streets" because she only cared about herself and most people were so so poor and the head people were wearing diamonds and jewels while the common people were starving.
