Beowulf is probably one of the best animated films of the past year. It was technically superb from an animation standpoint. The renderings of Angelina Jolie, Ray Winston, John Malkovich and Anthony Hopkins were so real, at times, you could have been lead to believe that the film sometimes switched to live action.
Aside from the animation being vastly superior to anything we have seen previously, the story is as timeless as ever. Granted I don’t remember enough details about the original story, having read it 17 years ago, to where I could judge whether the movie keeps true to the original.
The manner in which the story was represented was engaging. It was more than just a mere action film, replete with explosions and gore (which it has plenty of); it also had a lot of heart. The film really was about the guilt that comes from making impulsive choices, and that people, no matter how strong, heroic or legendary, are susceptible to making them. The film illustrates how those decisions could have lasting repercussions. Most importantly, this film is about redemption, and about taking responsibility for your own redemptive path.
For a film, and a legend, that is normally associated with testosterone fueled machismo, Robert Zemeckis’s Beowulf has a lot of heart.

I hate animated films with a passion, even the 3D kind, but this one wasn't bad. I honestly had no idea it was animated so I was shocked when it started and there were no real people anywhere but it was entertaining enough. There were a couple times when some of the actors looked real, but most didn't.
I personally thought the live action version starring Gerard Butler which was released on dvd earlier this year was much better. Then again one of the worst movies I've ever seen was also Beowulf (Christopher Lambert live-action version).

I just watched it. It has its good points and bad points.
Good points: The action scenes use 3D well.
There are some very lively monster-related antics.
I liked Beowulf's fixation on being a legend.
Bad points: All the female characters in the movie were unnaturally deadpan most of the time. "Oh, hm. It seems my husband just threw himself off the balcony. Guess you're the king now." There were a lot of moments like that. "Ho hum, see ya in the morning if you haven't been mauled to death by a giant monster."
They don't entirely have the the 3D thing down for scenes that aren't action. They do weird things like having people coming out from the screen, but the tops of their heads aren't in the picture, which hurts my visual cortex. They should put them back from the plane of the screen so it's like we're looking through a window, and then it would make more sense.

I wasn't aware Beowulf was out in theaters. Years ago I heard a rumor that it was bound to happen. I read part of Beowulf and it was a classic hero story, so if that's your taste, go see it. However it's just a movie, who knows what they changed from the book.

Heres my opinion: My friend was completely obsessed with Beowolf the book. And he said the movie ruined everything that the book was good for. And it was one of the worst movies ever. Maybe if it were'nt 100% animated it woudlnt suck but it's not getting many good reviews.
