I think you may mean Gentian Violet. I don't remember tasting
it, but I do remember it came in a little bottle and was used to paint the inside of the mouth and throat.

I agree with those who answered gentian violet solution. I never saw it used to paint the throat, but I know it was sometimes used that way. It kills bacteria and fungi. I imagine it would be yucky and gag-provoking.
The hospital still used it on babies where they cut the umbilical cord when my oldest daughter was born. It was used to prevent infections. I have a few photos of her and her purple-stained belly button...;)
It is also used to stain blood cells to prepare the cells for examination during some blood tests.

I just have to ask, what was the painting for in the first place?
I don't recall ever having that done. Or at least I never
tasted anything or saw anything purple. I had tonsilitus as a
kid and my tonsils rotted out like alot of kids back then. So it was mandatory for alot of us to have them out. I had to go in and have the doctor look at the back of my throat and take a culture with a long swab. I was always getting infections in
them. And I had to get injections of penicillion quite often.
Now you don't even hear of tonsilectomies anymore.
But then, you don't hear that much about cod liver oil either LOL.

Yes, the doctor came to the house with his black bag and painted my sore throat. Looking back it was probably strep throat but wasn't diagnosed then like now. My grandmother would "burn the lamp" whenever anyone in the house was sick to keep everyone else from catching it.I'm sure it was a creosote lamp oil because I still have the lamp and that is what it smells like.

Juju, no idea? And are you sure that other stuff wasn't cod liver oil? I watched a program where the dr. said cod liver oil may be very old fashion but it's still very good for you!
That P.M. med isn't serving you well tonight, hope you're okay!

I think it was an iodine tincture. We used a similar product in spray form on the cows in 4H back in the 60's. It was called "blue coat" It stained just like the security sensor tags that break in the clothing stores! That stuff was NASTY!
