-x = 8 -5y
x = -8 + 5y
do the substitution method:
(-8 + 5y) + 2y = 6
-8 + 7y = 6
7y = 6+8
7y = 14
y = 7
-x + 5(7) = 8
-x + 35 = 8
-x = -27
x = 27

Add the equations together, and the x's will cancel.
This leaves 7y = 14
So, y = 2
Then replace y in one of the original equations.
I'm using the bottom one, x + 2y = 6
x + 2(2) = 6
x + 4 = 6

this is 2 easy! x = y = 2
use the elimination method, cross out the x's since they are of opposite sign and add the rest to get 7y = 14 devide by 7 to get y = 2, plug in to either one of the equations you started off with and simplify. this gives you a value of 2 for x.

you are totally defeatinng the purpose of the question trying to get YOU to think of the solution. Gee, why stress your brain?? Do you think that once you're in the "real world" you'll be able to post a question every time you need an answer to a question you know how to answer? Or, you may just be in an "assembly" position where being able to answer a question like this will never be presented to you...all YOU'LL have to do is make the weld and move the piece..weld, repeat over and over............
