My house is that old and I was just wondering what people did back then, if anything. I live in the country yet I'm 10 minutes from the nearest grocery store so it's not like rolling farmland but still rural nonetheless.

Opium, Marijuana, Lithium, Cocaine, Morphine, Heroin and Alcohol, and Mescaline in the US. Many of which were legal and available over the counter, but, oddly enough, you needed a prescription to get Aspirin.
------edit

How common? Absinthe was legal then. So was cocaine and pot and alcohol and there are local varieties of things all over the world. Social conscience combined with the power of the tobacco industry has changed the profile and made non-tobacco entertainment risky. Joke, joke.

Those old grannies sitting on their porches rocking and smoking their pipes, didn't have tobacco in them.

There was also laudanum, and what about those "tonics" that the traveling peddlers used to sell..............mostly alcohol, and Lydia Pinkhams formula kept a lot of housewives happy.

They had opium and coke.....but mostly the good ole moonshine....it was cheaper and easier to get. A lot of meds back then had a lot of opium in them...so it was easy to get hooked on those and not really know it until it was too late.
