Prior to the term of Franklin Delano Rosevelt there were no term limits for american presidents, once he won his third term which would have amounted to 12 years in office the Congress passed the term limit law which limits a presidential candidate to two elected terms in office (8 years) or a maximum of 10 years in office in the event a VP takes over for a sitting president due to death or resignation/impeachment with 2 years or less served. In the event a VP takes over with more than 2 years left in the sitting presidents term the VP can only serve 4 elected years in office after his current term ends

FDR did. He was elected to four terms and is the reason for them amendment capping a Presidential run at two terms. While it is possible to serve a total of ten (well, 9 years, 179 days), I don't know of any other President who has been in office more than eight.

The president that was elected for four consecutive terms was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Before 1945 it was a tradition to run for only two terms. This precedent was set by George Washington - first president of the USA. After 1945 future presidents could only be elected for up to two consecutive terms .

Roosevelt's 4th consecutive election made Americans think 'Enough is enough' and the law making for 8 elected years
was instituted. Several other democracies of the world contemplate on such healthy provision in their constitution but fail to realize.
