I thought "tosser" refers to "tossing someones salad"...a reference to oral/anal contact.
If someone says that to you just say "No thanks. I don't like salad.."

"TOSSER: It's a general term for somebody who has done something stupid or behaves in a ridiculous way. It's rather passed into mainstream but it is originally particularly offensive: somebody who masturbates. The other popular slang word we have for that is W ANKER, but I have to say I don't know what American slang is for this."

The true meaning of tosser is that the person has made a mistake of some sort and his boss has said "well you are a big tosser arn't you".
