Talking on the local subnet always uses Layer 2/ARP addresses. If you sniff the network segment, you'll see ARP broadcasts asking "Who has 192.168.0.1?, Tell 00:50:30:20:10:34..." That's ARP broadcasts to find what the ARP address of that node is.
