The most likely cause of this is timing. There is a key between the flywheel and the crankshaft. It is there to protect the engine in case the blade hits something. The key will shear and disconnect the flywheel from the crankshaft. You will need to remove the engine cowling and the nut on the end of the crankshaft. Now you will be able to see if the keyways are aligned and the key is intact. To replace the key you will need a puller that bolts to the flywheel. A new key is about 50 cents.

Sounds like the timing is off. Hit any rocks with it? Remove the flywheel and inspect the key to see if it is distorted or sheared and replace it if necessary.
