Okay, here's the deal: I live on-campus in a university in Canada. Tonight my classmate which is a 50 y/o lady came to visit me and when she was leaving I wanted to go downstairs and smoke with her and when I grabbed my jacket she said "you can't come outside like that, gotta put on trousers" (I was wearing shorts), and I was like why, and she said it's not decent for this time of the year and there are drunk dudes outside and "you HAVE TO put on trousers".

Now I'm disappointed and thinking why would she say such a thing? This is a free country and on-campus housing is a safe place...and I didnt like her telling me what to do but I also didn't want to say it to her face cause I thought it may be too harsh and maybe she was just trying to be nice.

Everybody, please help me out here and tell me how would you feel if someone said that to you. She's quite an open person for a 50 y/o and has a boyfriend herself, it was just so unexpected from her...

well the lady does have a point, if it's cold she obviously didn't want you to be sick!, and drunk men...well that's true too, but why would she say that if you're dorm is a safe place? But that was also a bit demanding/pushy of her to say you HAVE TO, i agree, if you want to wear shorts you should wear shorts, but it's kinda is nearing winter sweety...you might not want to do that....=]

and how i would feel, well i'd be surprised just like you, but i'd still do what she asked, but i would also say don't worry about it, i enjoy wearing blah blah, and the campus is a safe place blah blah...so there's really nothing to be worried about...

...She was probably assuming the "maternal" role even if it was totally inappropriate and out of context. Maybe she was worried you would get cold. She was just demonstrating her "old school" values that may seem to you to be outmoded. It was her unfortunate and socially awkward attempt at protecting you. She sounds a little strange though. She should have told you not to smoke if she was truly concerned about you. Also, where does she get off telling you that wearing shorts is not "decent?" I would distance yourself from her henceforth. She sounds like a controlling individual.

It's the Mom in her, just let it go, she was worried someone would put the moves on you. remember she's 50, so she's probably thinking of you as a daughter and didn't stop to think that maybe your grown and on your own.

She was telling you how to dress outside of the place where you live? She sounds a little kooky to me.
