Right you are, Peggy! The Cure it is. (I seem to have stopped liking music after new wave).

However, it wouldn't be easy to point out just one band. my Lord is right about the Beatles, though. I also agree with the others mentioning The Clash, The Who, Pink Floyd and the Queen among others. The UK has produced a lot of great bands who in turn produced great music.

There's so many incredible british bands and I agree with most of these answers.
One band I'd like to add to this list is The Cure with their brilliant post-punk/new wave sound and lyrics as well as Robert Smith being a brilliant singer and performer.

Quick Edit: Siouxsie & The Banshees, should be mentioned as well for the same reasons and the fact Siouxsie is a talented women and Rob Smith was in the band for awhile.

I can't say about U.K. but in India Police band is famous. It's called at the time of famous marriages. We also hear them on Independence Day. Most famous is Presidential band from 3 wings of army.

The Beatles, they were big 40 years ago and their music is still listened to and loved by many who weren't even around during the 60s (myself included). I'm also partial to U2 and Radiohead.
