Communism is the ultimate conservatism. All nat'l resources controlled by a very small, elite class, while the nation is impoverished. In reality, Fascism and communism are not at opposite ends of the spectrum, because it comes full circle.
China is now serving as an example of this phenomenon. Exploiting the working class while a small group are becoming incredibly wealthy.
If America's most conservative community were born under communism, they'd be hardcore commies and liberals would be the reformers fighting for greater civil and economic freedoms. Gorbachev was a liberal.
Ignorant American conservatives think conservatism and capitalism are interchangeable. In reality, conservatism is totalitarian- a homogenized group without differences who don't trust change or outsiders. It has nothing to do with money and economic systems.

Communism, according to Karl Marx, is the ousting of Capitalism in all areas, and everyone ends up on equal terms. And according to Marx, it had to go through a few stages, such as having a dictator in power, which is why Communism as a whole will never work, not to mention it would only set those under Communist rule back decades, if not centuries (USSR). But Communism is an extreme version of Liberalism, while Fascism or Nazism would be on the extreme right. And in comparison, there are few differences, but Conservatives, prefer slow changes, Liberals, instant changes. So you see, on the far ends of the political spectrum, very little difference, but come towards the center and you find major differences.

Difference in the quality of terms.
Conservative vs liberal are relative terms, and only useful in context. Today, a Jeffersonian Liberal would be considered a Goldwater Conservative, for example. (They dislike absolutism).
But Communist is an absolute term with a clear, unchanging definition.
Therefore, comparisons between the two cannot be made without getting nailed by the rules of logic. It's like comparing the desire to give a kid an ice cream cone to a super nova.
Me, I'll buy the ice cream.

Conservatism in the classical sense is surprisingly similar to socialism. These philosophies emphasize obligations to our fellow man over personal liberty. Both are suspicious of democracy. Both require benevolent leaders.
However there's one MAJOR difference between the two. One stresses traditional sources of morality-church, nation & family. The other relies on newer social sciences.
You correctly point out that the 2 philosophies can & sometimes do co-exist. China is a great example of communists adopting conservatism to maintain their power. One could argue that Liberation Theology was an attempt by the Catholic Church to reconcile their conservatism with socialism.

But a communist is more left-wing. In theory, if you continue along the right spectrum, you end up with fascism, which is the opposite of communism.
Do keep in mind that many conservatives want liberal election spending laws

You obviously haven't thought through fully your question. Conservative, means to try and remain the same. Communism is the form of government that takes from the workers and gives to those who don't (work). Sounds a lot more like something the Democrats are pushing for -- a social(ist) program "safety net." It's not hard to see how you can go so far to the left that you end up on the extreme right.

Communists believe in revolution to overthrow the capitalist class.
Conservatives favor tradition and gradual change.
So there is no difference in a country with a communist tradition, but a world of difference in a capitalist one.

They are as far apart as the east is from the west.
Communists serve their leader or they are done away
with. You serve in their army, period. They have no rights or freedoms. You worship where your leader tells you to, not
where you'd like to. Communists put people to death on a
whim. You do not call your leader names or off with your
head.
Conservatives believe in freedom for everyone. Americans
have more "rights" and "freedoms" than any other country.
Our leaders are voted in by the common citizens. You only
serve in the armed service here if you volunteer - no draft
with the Republicans in office, tho Democrats want to re-
install the draft and make all men serve who are the right
age (18 - 35). Conservatives believe in everyone having
the right to worship wherever they desire.Conservatives
want to keep innocent babies from being killed, tho
Democrats call it ".choice" to abort them. Democrats can
call our president every evil name and not one finger is
cut off the name-caller.
Actually, there's just not hardly anything they have in common.

I'm a conservative, and there's a vast difference between conservatism and communism. So too, is there a difference between conservatism and the people who have called themselves "conservatives" since 2000. They are NOT conservatives, and our Naked Emperor is way more liberal than any liberal on a money drunk.
