a 4x4 had its all wheels run with the driver had a choice to which he could select between front or rear wheels drives or turns.
AWD or all wheel drive is a compact all wheel driving the vehicle.
A 4WD or four wheel drive had no difference with a 4x4

There's really none. The different uses of those terms in marketing are all based on the choice of the person doing the marketing.

In marketing, AWD is usually used to describe more car-like systems that don't have anything the driver would chose to control. Particularly, if there's no low range, they often get referred to as AWD.

4x4 and 4WD are the same - they're used to describe the kind of system you'd have on a truck, where you have to decide what mode you're going to operate in.

But the terms don't really suggest anything more specific than that.

AWD is 4wd...which is the same as 4x4. The vehicle has 4 wheels all of which are being driven through a differential system.

4x4 and 4WD are pretty much one and the same, although very few vehicles actually have all four wheels pulling at the same time.
AWD - all wheel drive, meaning all wheels are capable of pulling usually the front or the rear or all four to some degree but not necessarily equal. Usually accomplished by fluids rather than gears.
