Try Alcoholics Anonymous. You don't have to be an alcoholic to go to a meeting. It's a religious cult that claims as an article of faith that it is nothing of the sort. They have a twelve-step program that can fit on one page. Few people realize that the first two steps are right out of Martin Luther's salvation by faith alone. Of course Luther was talking about salvation, not sobriety. The fourth step is a confessional thing that looks a lot like the Catholics. I don't know how many other religions made it in there.
The people at A.A. don't fit in any category. They are not a bunch of winos. They could be you or your neighbor or a total stranger. They're all sober and there are a lot of women there who you wouldn't think ever saw the inside of a bar.

What about writing about a religious conflict. You could do the Arab Israeli conflict, or the crusades. You could also compare and contrast different religions.
