Respected.

I have been feared at times, due to positions I have been in and at times just because of my size and the way I look. I have never enjoyed it. For a couple of terms I was on the local Superior Court Bench, and had to deal with people in the courtroom who were full of fear. And yes, you can smell fear. Didn't enjoy having that much power over peoples lives.

Being liked is nice if it is with respect and genuine. Friendship is a wonderful thing.

Mutual respect is a very good thing and most of what is meaningful in this world is accomplished in an atmosphere of mutual respect. I worked for many years with people who respected each other as well as themselves, and we accomplished some great things. Then that came to an end. We had a boss that had only his own interests at heart and he had no respect for those around him. It took very little time for any respect that he had been given on faith because of the position he had been put in, to evaporate. And the organization never recovered even after he was gone.

Respected! I am in management and having 150 employees in my workforce being respected by them means many things. I will get the best effort out of them because they want to do what I ask. This is based on my skills as a manager. Train them and work with them, show them how to do the job, listen to them when they have a thought problem or solution. I treat them like I want to be treated. For that they do alot for me. If being liked is what I am striving for then I hope I am only in it to make friends! Being feared is ridiculous. Having people fear you shows a different side of these people. They do not truly like you. They want to get away from you.

I would always say 'You don't have to like me, but you have to respect me.' So I would pick respected. Feared is out of the question for me.

Respected: I need to be respected in my job as a retail manager so my staff will accept my decisions even if I consult with them in the process.
I need to be respected in my personal life because if I am merely liked, it doesn't mean I will get the same degree of consideration as I do for being respected.
