All these years I thought that Dirk Graham was just well tanned. I was thinking about the long term value that Calgary got by trading for Jarome Iginla (full name-Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla) for Joe Nieuwendyk and came accross the fact that Iginla was the second black captain in the NHL-the first being Dirk and I was dumbfounded- Dirk was black? How could I not have known this?
Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Elaine was not sure if her boyfriend was white or black.
Anyway, am I the only moron here that did not know that Dirk Graham was the first captain of African descent?

Puckdat- love South Park, no eye rolling there. That didn't come until the kumbayah that followed. Was he a black hockey player or a hockey player that was black type of thing?? I don't know, don't get it. Nothing wrong with recognizing someone's race IMO, the problem is when we make a big deal out of it like it is taboo or something.

I had NO IDEA!!! Love the afro picture.

It reminds me of the time at work, about 10 years ago, I worked with a black lady, Cindy. Since, I had been working with her for so long, I forgot Cindy was black. I had hired a new employee one day, and she was also black. So, the day the new employee was coming in for her 1st day at work, I asked to Cindy (you know, like on the down low), "Cindy, do you think there are going to be any cultural barriers where the new person might be uncomfortable, because the new person, I hired is African-American."

Cindy, said back to me, "I'm BLACK you FOOL!!!"

Wow, I guess when you are not a racist, you truly are color blind. I didn't know Tony Dungy was of African decent, until they won the Super Bowl. AND I LIVE IN TAMPA!!!!!

Kind of reminds me of an episode of South Park (stop rolling your eyes!). It was about the town flag and the adults saw it one way and took it as racist but, the kids didn't even notice it until the adults brought it up. I never saw him as Black and obviously neither did you. Did it really matter that we didn't know? It shouldn't. We accepted Dirk for being Dirk. It bothers me that people need to slap labels on things like this. I only found out because someone asked a question about a month ago so I looked him up and saw what you saw. I wasn't shocked. And I wasn't surprised that because he was a Canadian there wasn't a lot made of it either and in my opinion there shouldn't be. I think it would take away from who he is and what he has done. I think when we all stop noticing things like this we'll find it's easier to get along.
I'd be interested to see if LITY has a Dirk Graham story to make this question complete.

Hey, I gave all my NYC friends a huge laugh when I revealed that I didn't know Derek Jeter is black.
Or Vin Diesel.
I'm about as pasty white Northern European as they come, and I'm darker than these guys. Who knew?
Live and learn.
