I'm still in high school and I really love to act but I haven't really had a chance to do any. Right now, the school I go to doesn't have a drama program so that is out of the question. I know how to memorize lines and bring a charecter to life! Really, all I want to do is act! Can anyone help me out?

Hi, that's great that you want to act! I studied theatre at uni, although I majored in the technical production side of things, as opposed to acting. I've had a slight career move since then - at the moment I am forging a career for myself in the music industry as a singer/songwriter, but essentially the passion felt by carrying out either acting or singing work is much the same.

The first piece of advice I want to offer is to never ever *ever* give up the hope. The road to becoming a successful, reknowned actor is long and challenging, but if you hold on to that passion you'll overcome the hardships and things will all fall into place. I have friends of mine from the theatre course who have given up and tell themselves they are "destined to work behind a bar for the rest of their lives," and I have other friends who are doing the hard yards, picking up small acting parts, and slowly making a name for themselves. That's the kinda person you have to be - and judging by how you asked your question, it's clear to see that you have those qualities :-)

I encourage you to join a community acting group, I found that they are by far the best way to become involved in the industry. Very often they'll put on plays or pantomines where young members of the community are more than welcomed into the lineup, so if you could get a part in something like that you'll be well on your way to some good experience, and you'll learn the basics of liaising with directors / choreographers / other actors / the techincal crew etc. So for now, search around for such a group, attend any workshops they might offer, meet other likeminded people and audition for any parts that interest you.

You say your school doesn't have a drama program, which is a shame, but if you can show that you ovecame that barrier by joining a community group you'll be more likely to get a position in a drama college after school - if that's the road you want to go down (which I highly recommend). Most university positions are determined by the marks you get in school, whereas positions in drama colleges are moreso audition-based. So you don't necessarily even have to have attended drama class in school - so long as you can prove your passion and pass the audition.

But really, I can't emphasise enough how important it is to follow your dreams and don't let anything get in your way to stop that from happening!! Not enough people in the world follow their dreams - or they attempt to, but get discouraged and settle for a life of "what could have been..." It'll be a hard road - there will be failures, criticisms, tensions and tears to overcome - but on the other hand you will come out the other side a much stronger person, and you'll get the opportunity to not only do something you love but to experience that amazing emotional connection with your audience, which only a performer can know.

The earlier you start getting out there and putting in the work, the earlier you'll get your break and be Hollywood's next up-and-comer. Good luck, and I wish you all the best with your future :D

Study drama in college and there you will learn not only the basics of acting but also how to develop your acting career. You can start out at a community college, too, they often have quite good drama departments.

Find a college that has a great drama department or even an acting major and go for it! Aim high and don't look back! There are lots of scholarships and grants out there to help fund college and your dream.
