Due diligence is the wider term, to cover the whole process of checking out a potential employee. It includes interviews, criminal and background checks. Attention would focus on unexplained gaps in employment history, short spells with several employers, etc. The more key the position, the more rigorous the checks. Some firms hire outside parties to conduct the background checks for them. These could even involve the use of private investigators as well as checking with Universities to confirm that the candidate did graduate as claimed.
