back in the day, the NFL (now NFC) was much better, and killed the AFL (now AFC) all the time, so the better teams, and the oldest teams were put in the NFC during the merger. instead of switching many teams around. since then, the AFC for some reason seems to be better. theres no geographical lines, but two teams from new york or from the same relative area would be in different conferences, also how the 49ers and Raiders are, both being in the bay area. They couldve just done East and West, but i guess time zones would be a little iffy on that, seeing as games are on sundays and work nights, rather than saturday and friday.

the two leagues, (afl and nfl), merged in the 60's and basicly, the nfl became the nfc and the afl became the afc, with a couple of exceptions. the colts and browns went to the afc. that format has remained intact with just a few changes. obviously, when a new franchise comes into existence, like the texans, they have been assigned to the conference division that needs them.

the last major change was when they went to the four balanced regional divisions and moved the seahawks from the afc to nfc. 32 teams, 16 per conference, four per division along gepgraphical boundries.
