Chechnya was incorporated into Russia in the 1870s. In 1936 Stalin created the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Republic but in 1944 he deported more than 1 million Chechens, Ingush, and other North Caucasian peoples to Siberia and Central Asia on the pretext that they had collaborated with the Nazis. The deportees were returned to the Caucasus in 1956, and the republic was reestablished in 1957.

During the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Chechen-Ingush Republic was split into the Republic of Ingushetia which wanted to remain part of Russia and the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria which sought independence. Boris Yeltsin sent in troops to quell rebellion in Chechnya in November 1991.

Following the First Chechen War (1994-1996) with Russia, Chechnya gained a de facto independence from Russia. However, Russian federal control was restored after the Second Chechen War (August 1999) in which Russian forces largely recaptured the separatist region of Chechnya.

As a federal subject of Russia, Chechen ‘independence’ is fragile. In 2003, a new Chechen constitution was passed in a referendum. The 2003 Constitution granted the Chechen Republic a significant degree of autonomy, but still tied it firmly to the Russian Federation and Moscow's rule.

Same time all the other former Soviet Republics did, Russia went in shorty after, then gave Chechnya some autonomy until it invaded Dagestan
